Writer's Block: Finders keepers?

If it were a huge wad o' cash - like a satchel full of small-denomination, umarked bills, the police would be the destinataires.
A wallet with identification? I'd turn it in.
Wad o' cash? Pick it up and say nothing, and watch for someone to show up looking frantic. If nobody did, I'd pass the librarian/bartender/maître d' a note that said: "I found something tonight of significant value. If someone comes in asking about it, direct them to [phone number]. If they can identify the lost item, it will be returned to them." After a couple of weeks, I'd consider it mine.
Projected on the screen at a movie theatre: "A $100.00 bill has been found in the lobby. Will the owner please form a line at the box office." You can't just stand up in the crowd and shout, "Who lost a Benjamin?" Too many people are simply not honest.
Find $10.00 in the street with no one around? I did, and gave it to the first homeless lady I saw.
Coins? Hqiz, I'll go down for a penny. Do it 100 times, and not only do you get some exercise, you have a dollar. My kids used to throw pennies away... drove me nuts.

To answer the poll question, I think I'd leave it right there. If I picked it up for even a second, the person who lost it might show up and accuse me of theft. Worse, I'd suspect a prank trap.
