"Avatar" hits 1 Gigadollar

Since it's opening 17 days ago, Avatar has grossed 1 billion dollars worldwide. Seventeen days.

According to CNN, Dark Knight took almost its entire theatrical run to do that.

I guess that shuts the hqiz out of any mealy-mouthed reviewer that didn't like the film.

And, that pretty much guarantees the next sequel. Booyah!

Okay, I gotta ask: Who does your emoticons?
All of them are totally neat and make me wish I had a set of them of my own fursona...

same here! I've been wondering for a while lol

I'm convinced Avatar (and Up and Pixar as well in general) are proof that worldwide audiences are sick of being treated like chumps by marketing departments of movie companies.

I do them myself, based on a set of wuffers I found out there. The set I plundered had the basic emotions, and I've just tweaked and built on those. Image

How do you mean?

[identity profile] deckardcanine.livejournal.com 2010-01-04 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it does not guarantee a sequel. Titanic didn't get one. Avatar has a more open ending, what with the likelihood of another human attack, but I find it hard to picture how they'd make a whole movie out of it.

Yes, it does guarantee a sequel. Cameron has already said he has two more scripts more or less complete, and was just waiting to see if the first was successful.

Well, it would be hard to Raise the Titanic....
especially after Lew Grade had tried....

I mean people are thoroughly sick of remakes, insipid comedies and second rate comic and cartoon characters turned into movies.

Even though avatar has a linear plot lifted straight from fern gully, it is different and original enough to stand head and shoulders from all the crap at the cinemas in the last 5 to 8 years ( with a few exceptions of course).

I bet they take my advice and come back with a longwall. Haha

I'd feel more confident of that trend if The Dark Knight weren't right behind Avatar in financial success.

Also, the plot was more Dances With Wolves than FernGully. I think nobody who liked FG ever makes the comparison.

Credit where credit is due, they did a darn good job on dark knight, and if Heath Ledger hadn't have done the role of the Joker so well (and subsequently died) it would have also been a mediocre movie and probably wouldn't have done so well.

I liked Fern Gully. I'm comfortable with the comparison. I also enjoyed Dances with Wolves, but think it isn't the best fit for comparison.
