I think that since the mealworms are in effect a live insect larva, that there is the possibility that they can eat through whatever eats them unless they are thoroughly nommed. I have a friend who cuts off the heads before he feeds them to his bearded dragons to avoid any damage to their digestive tract.
You win the prize - Batty told me that's the exact reason... he says they do indeed bite. A side benefit is that it gives the little critter a yummy, juicy spot to start on.
