People over-rate presidential power.
Sep. 11th, 2008 12:29 pmSo just what would happen if McCain took the oath of office and then keeled over like a sack of potatoes? Would our nation immediately launch its 25,000 nukes at Moscow? Would the Oval Office have a hotline to Yogge-Sothothe? Would Utah become a toxic waste dump for Italy's nuclear detritus?
Folks, it doesn't work like that. POTUS is the executor. People love flinging muck at Bush, but W has not enacted a single law during his 8 years in office. For those who have forgotten, Congress is where laws are made, and if our economy is in the toilet and our global reputation in the septic tank, we need look no further than the august chambers in the Capitol building. There is putrefaction there to match anything found in the cabals of the Halliburton presidential advisory board.
We live in a nation of checks and balances. Now don't get me started on how skewed some of those safeguards have become, that's a subject for another day... all I'm saying here is that a Palin presidency would not be the disaster that everyone is bitching and moaning about. We limit Presidential terms to 8 years, but an old segregationist like Strom Thurmond can serve in the senate for more than 46 years and wield unspeakable power without anyone batting an eyelash?
Republicans and Democrats alike who are interested in the welfare of our nation would be better advised to look at what's going on on Congress rather than wasting all this energy and money on presidential mudslinging.
