I've heard that Darwin wasn't the first to suspect evolution, just the first to publish documented evidence of it. (This came up when I wondered aloud what pre-Darwin atheists believed to be the origins of complex life forms. I suspected that what people really have against macroevolution theory is that it makes a lack of God seem possible, not so much probable.)
