Despite this scam's being all over the web since 2008, and perhaps earlier, it continues to be practiced, this time from Australia. If "Joe Ryan" is the real name of anyone who is associated with this bunco scheme, I'll eat the Brooklyn Bridge.

Here is a letter my mother received this week:





Typical scam stuff. Fill it out, send it in, they send you a bogus check for $5,000 and ask you to wire $3500 to Australia for an even bigger prize of $50,000. The check is bogus, the scumbags have your money, and you're a criminal for cashing a fraudulent check.

These frauds typically target the elderly, many of whom live on the edge of economic terror anyway. Please protect your loved ones from this type of diabolical scheme.

Who's the authority in Australia that goes after these people? I'd be pleased to forward this info along to them... it's like trying to the Mississippi River upstream, but every little bit helps.
