Occasionally on the Interwebs one comes across rather sensational photos. I've seen this one in numerous places, with a caption like "Tragic accident caught at the moment of death," or some such.

It always disturbed me, just because it was so poignant, and I could only imagine the terror of the two pilots as they augered their plane into the ground at 150 MPH or whatever.

Well, guess what? It was an accident, and it was unfortunate, but no loss of life was sustained. The nosewheel collapsed on landing, leading to a spectacular flip, but no deaths.

Fortunately, things are not always as they seem.

Some time ago I received an invitation from someone on my friends list to join the following application. I never use apps, for some fundamental reasons of privacy, but I usually check them out so I can warn others if an app seems flaky.

This one took the cake.

So by clicking "Allow", I would be

  1. Giving all my info to the publishers
  2. Allowing them to market to me via email at any time
  3. Allowing them to post anything to Facebook at any time using my name, effectively marketing to all my friends.
  4. And allowing them to mine into my data 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Naturally, I reported this app to Facebook and it seems to have vanished rather quickly. However, I wonder how many people just clicked "Allow" without thinking about it?

Practice safe Facebooking - don't click something without knowing what you're getting into.
