The assassination of John F. Kennedy. I was on my way home from boarding school in Connecticut on the NYNH&H railroad when the shooting took place. The cab driver who drove me home from Grand Central turned around and asked me how it felt to be without a president. When I arrived home, my mother was in tears. For various and sundry reasons, I was so emotionally dead at that age that it didn't really affect me at the time. The overall effect on my world view would have been the same if you had told me that the Brooklyn Dodgers won the World Series.
It took me decades to break that wall of stone around my heart...
