The oscillating Iodine Clock

Remember the iodine clock? Two clear solutions are mixed and at first there is no visible reaction, but after a short time delay, the liquid suddenly turns to a shade of dark blue. I remember this from chemistry class, and I always thought it was cool.

I see that it was only, as they say, the rudiments of coolness.

The official name is the Briggs-Rauscher reaction.

Yep. Mr. Desantis showed that to us in High School. He never told us what the solutions were, though.

I'm having a memory that you mentioned that before. Was that really his name? Do you remember his first name?

Yep, we did talk about him when I learned about someone else with the same surname. My Physics and Chemistry teacher was named Emilio DeSantis. He had a bit of a lithp, and wild gaulish eyebrows.

Ain't that the pip? I wish I knew if we were related. I just got a whole new bunch of info about a new branch of the family as you may have read... the trouble is that there are DeSantis branches all over Italy, and not just from Calabria. It's not like Jones, but it's not an uncommon name.

Anyway, it was interesting to know.

Indeed. Alas, he's retired since my graduation, or I would try to get you in touch with him.

I recall seeing something like this on "Mr. Wizard's World." The liquid changed color so fast I thought they were messing with the camera.
