Hellfire takes out Afghan insurgents

Watch this video as a Hellfire takes out three insurgents placing an IED on a road in Afghanistan. What impresses me is the care with which they assess the situation, making sure the targets are not just random civilians burying their treasure or something. Once they've determined that the three of them have planted an IED, Foosh! Good night, Achmed! Hellfire indeed.



I rejoice in the death of no man, but this particular operation saved innocent lives. God bless our military!

There was a similar one on YouTube where the Apache Pilot and the area commander (Watching real time through a predator drone), went through all this type verification before taking out a group of terrorists sniping off a roof in Iraq. I'll see if I can find that one again.

Its amazing the patience these folks have to verify who they blow away before they do. Folks who thing our military is just a bunch of hyper aggressive barbarians need to watch things like this more to buy a clue.

That's how it works, unfortunately. Either we shoot them or they blow us up. Most of the Canadians in Afghanistan have been taken out by these cowardly devices. At least previous enemies had the decency to shoot at us instead of doing it remotely.

What's the difference between an IED and a land mine? Are they the same thing with a new buzzword name, or something different?

I think the difference is between mass-manufactured devices versus hand-made stuff patched together...
(I could, of course, be wrong, but that's what it sounds like through the media, so YMMV)

IED "Improvised Explosive Device" ie home made out of whatever they can find, rather than factory manufactured munitions like landmines.


I think anyway, I'm not an expert on the subject.

Many are backyard constructions, but a lot over the last couple of years have Iran written all over them. Shipped over the border to supply the terrorists. Lots of times they are artillery shells strapped up to a timer or remote.

IED's are becoming terribly sophisticated. Land mines are generally buried things which are detonated by pressure or magnetism. These can be detonated remotely with cell phones, concealed at the side of roads in heaps of garbage, and more and more containing powerful shaped charges which direct the force of the armor-piercing explosion towards the target.

The "Achmed" part doesn't sit well with me. There are plenty of non-terrorists by that name, some of whom may be fighting the terrorists. It's as bad as saying "Good night, Nguyen" in the Vietnam War.
