Headed up the hill today at 9:30 AM. I drove to the trailhead to make sure I'd have the energy to get to my goal, and I'm glad I did.

I hadn't planned on doing any more acorns this year, but as I wended my way up the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, I passed stand after stand of lovely, ripe, unspoiled and rather large acorns... I couldn't refuse the Divine Bounty. So I gathered and gathered, filled the pockets of my camo jacket and then tucked it away in the brush to retreive on my way back down - I must have had at least 4 pounds in the pockets.

Continued up the hill, reaching the false summit of Little Black Mountain at 2:00 PM. It was only 3.8 miles each way, but the vertical climb was 2346 feet, and there were some pretty steep sections. Began at 5266 and ended at 7612. No company but lizards, horned toads, dragonflies and grasshoppers.

Today's route:

Took numerous panoramæ on the way up - unfortunately it was a hazy day, so the impact isn't the best...

On the way back down, I noticed a curious black pipe wedged in the rocks:

My first Geocache (GC12M44), and I wasn't even looking. Hqiz, like I have time for another obsession...

I left a small carabiner that was attached to my flashlight and made an entry in the log.

I would have actually gone farther today, but I was running out of water - it was a beautiful hike, but this particular route is pretty dry and barren, with very little or no shade at all. Next time I come this way I may need to make it an overnight affair if I want to push all the way to the Great Western Trail.

Partway down the trail, I found my little black travel umbrella that I had lost without even knowing it... right in the middle of the trail. Score!

Heading back down (note: downhill uses completely different muscles than uphill!) I collected my acorn-laden jacket and got back to base at 4:30 - 2½ hours down as opposed to 4½ hours up... but I spent a lot of time on the way up gathering acorns, too.

Saw some beautiful fall colors on the way down: The Heckwinocks is past...

Feet: Very sore.
Legs: Very tired.
Neck: Very burned.
Acorns: 6.8 lbs gathered
Soul: Very satisfied.

A few cross-eye stereograms and red-blue anaglyphs, if you are interested in such things:

They're only about 4 cm long... you have to get a couple of dozen to make a meal, and I didn't have the time to chase that many down.

Geocaching looks like heaps of fun (though I need another hobby like a hole in the head).

Your email still hasn't come through. I have changed email adresses for LJ and am recieving things again so it seems it is a LJ-hotmail hate hate thing going on.
