Well, Mum's out of surgery - the doctor said that physically she tolerated it well, but she's going to have quite a month ahead of her. If you have a strong stomach, you can google "forehead flap" and see what kinds of things they do to people. It's a temporary situation which ultimately leads to a much better outcome but in the meantime looks pretty scary.
She's got a Frankenstein scar down her forehead, and a pedicle or bridge of skin from her eyebrows to the side of her nose where the skin was used to rebuild the structure, plus some other open areas which will heal over time. Right now she's still pretty out of it, doesn't know who she is or where she is, but Daktari says she should be able to go home tomorrow. I'll believe that when I see it - I've seen elderly people take weeks to come out of general anaesthesia. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Mum won't be one of them.
