The old stand-by: Steel-cut oats with honey, and some 9-grain toast. Half a grapefruit when they're big and in season, and I feel like taking the time to prepare one.

Alternate yummies: grits with butter; raisin bran; raw oatmeal with raisins; Life cereal.

I won't turn up my nose at fried eggs, or scrambled eggs, or coddled eggs, or bacon or ham or sausages or broiled tomatoes or geitost, or potato pancakes with applesauce or tomatensild or edam or jarlsberg or... well, usually only get that in a hotel.

I think my favorite is a very nice Japanese breakfast of broiled fish, tskukemono, natto, rice and umeboshi.

... while eating, bite your lip hard, and then have it swell up, and despite your best intentions and carefulness, you nail the bump again and again, and by the fourth or fifth time the tears come and you uncork a barrage of obscenity that blisters the paint on your walls and sends the dog scurrying for cover under the bed?

Just wondering...

OUCH!

Well, I don't have a yiddische mama, but I got thinking about the old days in New York, and a dear friend and sometime surrogate father who on occasion took me to the Tip Toe Inn, where you could get the most amazing hot pastrami sandwiches and potato pancakes.

Sadly, the restaurant is no longer there... but latkes aren't hard to make, and I had some potatoes in my fridge waiting to be used, and an onion, so I whipped myself up some for supper tonite, and was well-rewarded for my efforts. They brought back very fond memories, they did.
