(Newser) Rahm Emanuel says he's sorry he called liberals "retarded" in August, and he has personally apologized to the CEO of the Special Olympics. "The apology was accepted,” a White House aide tells the Washington Post. The comment has drawn fire since it came to light, and it prompted Sarah Palin to demand that Emanuel be fired.

Emanuel mis-used the word, and apologized, and his apology was accepted. Here is the proper usage for the term.

People with Down Syndrome are developmentally challenged.
Sarah Palin is retarded.

Autistic people have learning disabilities.
Sarah Palin is retarded.

People born with fetal alcohol syndrome have had their neural cortices damaged in utero, and may have educational and social challenges.
Sarah Palin is retarded.

I hope this clears up any misunderstandings.

Funny, I thought Emanuel was a liberal. He's certainly not popular with conservatives, and he was the loose basis for Josh Lyman on "The West Wing." Maybe he just meant many of his fellow liberals.

Personally, I never use "retarded" as an insult. Not only does it offend many more than its target, but it comes across as sophomoric.

Thanks for giving me my giggle for the day.

Can't stand Sarah Palin. She was woefully unprepared when McCain thrust her into the spotlight, and she has apparently done nothing to rectify that situation.

My unsolicited advice to her was run for congress, spend 10 years in the trenches, and then re-assess.

Palin is one more piece of evidence for my theory that the role of vice-president is to serve as a ridicule bodyguard and take the heat from the press and comedians instead of the president. CF Dan Quayle, Al Gore, Dick Cheny, and Joe Biden.

Unfortunately, it seems to me that only Quayle has been more ridiculed than the corresponding president.

He apologized. It was accepted. That to me should be end of story. Learn from it and move on. If you fired every one that said something wrong. Well we all would be out of a job.
