Tahir ul-Qadri, founder of the Minhaj-ul-Quran International, announces a 600-page fatwa in London which condemns terrorism and declares terrorists as enemies of God.

"The anti-terrorism fatwa ... pulled no punches, declaring that terrorism was "haraam," or forbidden by the Qur'an, and that suicide bombers would be rewarded not by 72 virgins in heaven, as many terrorist recruiters promise, but with a suite in hell."

Salman Ahmad, the lead singer of the Pakistani rock band "Junoon" and author of "Rock & Roll Jihad: A Muslim Rock Star's Revolution" said, "It's about time Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda realize that Muslims will not allow their faith and identity to be hijacked by a bunch of thugs masquerading as holy men."

My comment at the CNN website:

The most discouraging thing about the abomination of terrorism has been the thundering silence from the Islamic world in general, which implies tacit approval. The more leaders who will step up and join the global condemnation of terror in the name of Islam, the faster terrorists will find themselves isolated, despised, and cut off from support and funding. This may be a small step in terms of global impact, but could have far-reaching repercussions - it takes only one snowflake to start an avalanche.

So let it be written, so let it be done!

Unfortunately all three of the Abrahamic religions have a rather bloody history. The difference with Judaism and Christianity is that we've moved beyond violence for the most part (some unofficial 'Baptist' churches shall remain nameless...). There is every reason to think that Islam will be able to move beyond its violent present as well.

'Tis a consummation devoutly to be desired...

If you're thinking of the Westboro Baptist Church, much as they annoy us all, I don't construe their actions as violent.

Fortunately for the rest of the world, most people do.

Talk to the family of a slain soldier whose honorable sacrifice has been denigrated by these hateful demons, and you'll get an earful about how it made them feel. Violence comes in many forms, only one of which is physical.

Or paralyzing fear. But that's a flimsy excuse when you have God to give you courage.
