RottenTomatoes gave it a 39%. One reviewer said it played like a video game.

Such games I should have.

I remember my kids playing PoP on our old Macintosh LC. It was a cute game. I liked Dark Castle better, but hey, there's no arguing taste. This film, loosely based on the PoP game world, was a tremendous ride with a lot of heart. Frankly, I don't know what all these snobby movie critics expect when they go to a movie like this.

The hero was handsome and vigorous and athletic and clever. The princess was appropriately beautiful and feisty and noble and smart. The supporting characters were excellent. The villains were villainous, the CG convincing, the effects impressive, the swashbuckling very swashbuckly, and the story entertaining. I didn't see a single instance of what I would call bad acting in the entire film. And there was a twist at the end that I didn't expect at all, which put a big grin on my face.

Bah. Some people are just as boring as lichen. This was a great film in my book.

Overall Rating: 8 out of 10 stars.

And now to bed!

Sometimes I think they send the wrong reviewer to review movies.

Reading some reviews, you just have to wonder why they're even bothering, as many times they've already made up their minds how they're going to like the movie, and it really shows through in the review.
(one review I read on the latest remake of Robin Hood was filled with complaints about how it's already been remade to death and there were no good reasons left for making a new one)

A more accurate review might have been Since this film isn't Robin Hood by any version I've heard of why in the names of Rathbone and Rickman call it Robin Hood? And if it be Robin Hood why bugger about with the story?
And with history about as accurate as "The Patriot" or "Enigma" or "Operation Burma" for that matter are we trying to mess with American minds?
Oh, and what was Damodar doing there when there were no dragons?

As game movies go, it's doing quite well. I may yet see it in a theater, tho I'll give higher priority to The A-Team and, of course, Toy Story 3.

The only other game movie I've seen most of is Mortal Kombat, thanks to my college roommate. Fitfully entertaining; could've used a bigger budget.

You might also count Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland. Sure, Nemo originated in a comic strip, but he'd disappeared for decades before the NES game Little Nemo: The Dream Master put him back in the spotlight. If nothing else, the game's cover art must have influenced the animation style.
