Yesterday Mother received this letter in the mail, purportedly from "Apex Financial Services" (Click for a larger version).

Included was this "check" (Click for a larger version):

The scam prompts people to deposit the "check", send most of it back for "taxes", and collect a huge prize.

Of course, there is no prize, the check is bogus, and when it bounces the victim is not only liable for the lost money, but is also now guilty of financial fraud himself or herself.

I am so sad for all the elderly or unaware people in the country who will fall for this.

Fortunately, the law enforcement agencies are always working behind the scenes to catch "those evileyed - blackhanded - bowlegged - flinthearted - clawfingered - foulbellied - bloodthirsty, morimaite-sincahonda," ... well, those scumbags - and on occasion they are successful. I continue to receive updates from the victim notification system about five such hqiz-eaters who are either in jail or headed there for a scam operation that Mom was a victim of several years ago. Huge props to the FBI and the RCMP for their apprehension.

I repeat here Rule Number One of sweepstakes:

You never pay money to collect a prize!

Educate your loved ones. Teach them about such fraudulent operations, don't let greed or desperation entrap them into sending their hard-earned money to these base, proud, shallow, beggarly, three-suited, hundred-pound, filthy, worsted-stocking knaves.

Good catch!

My mother recently almost got caught by a supposedly Canadian medicine supplier; My father has heart problems, and the only medicine he can use is horrendously expensive locally. Fortunately, a friend warned her off so she could cancel her credit cards and warn the bank.

Ah, I recognized Treebeard's talk!

I think you may pay postage to collect a prize, but that's it.
