Can get thrown in jail for speaking: Irish, Mandarin, Arabic, Romanian, Dutch, Greek
Can read without much difficulty: Portuguese, Danish, Swedish
Have studied: Latin, Arabic, Korean, Bulgarian, Albanian, Welsh, Lingala, Turkish
Charles Berlitz listed the 14 languages with the largest number of speakers as:
Chinese, English, Hindi/Urdu, Russian, Spanish, Japanese, German, Indonesian, Portuguese, French, Arabic, Bengali, Malay, and Italian.
He stated, "Since most of the world's population either speaks or is familiar with one of the fourteen langauges listed above, or with one of three other widely-spoken langauge - Dutch, Greek, Swahili - or with a language in either the Scandinavian, the Turkik or the Slavic group, it is possible for an individual with the time and inclination to be able to communicate with the great majority of the inhabitants of the planet by learning to speak these 20 languages."
Don't know if I'll ever hit the full 20, but I've made a good dent in it, any road.
