Hustling back from California, putting together a memorial reception for my mother was made infinitely easier by the good will of my aunt, Ruth Draper Crockatt. She arranged for a buffet at the Salt Lake Country Club, and we were able to get the info into Mom's obituary. We had a small but intimate turnout, and a number of people showed up whom I hadn't seen forever; also, my first boss from the Church Translation department came to pay his respects, which was surprising and appreciated.

Views of the Salt Lake Country Club

I delivered a brief eulogy, and several attendees also shared memories of their experiences with mother. Apparently she had this habit of blowing into Salt Lake like an entire theatre troupe and disrupting the lives of family, albeit in a charming way. I could see her flair for the dramatic reflected in the persona of my youngest cousin, who acts daily on the stage of an elementary school classroom and who must, as a result, be beloved of her students.

We also had a lot of mom's jewelry and memorabilia out, and at the end of the service I gave people the opportunity to take something home that had meaning for them, which seemed appreciated.

The buffet was delightful - lots and lots of fruits, plain and exotic, and some very nice dishes which were superb, although they defied description.

It seemed just right, and I think Mother would have been pleased. Huge thanks to Aunt Ruth for making this lovely venue available, and to the administrators, caterers and staff of the Salt Lake Country club for a perfect presentation.

Many thanks! I felt bad I had to hustle back so fast, I was thinking I could meet up with you and your new squeeze. Another time.

Just from that handful of photos I can see she lived a life less ordinary.

My condolences, my friend.

"less ordinary" is quite an understatement in her case. Thanks very much for your thoughts.
