Normally I would delete a random comment-blast like this, but one of the reasons I support Livejournal is that I know it functions as a place for Russian bloggers to express their opinions freely. As a result, I was happy to go fill out the poll.

For what it's worth, Russians deserve much better than what their government is offering them. Medvedev was just Putin's puppet, so really there has been no change of leadership - and it looks as though Putin is moving to consolidate his power even further. I fear a return to the bad old days, even though there are many in Russia who still long for the old regime. Given the economic turmoil that took place after the fall of the CCCP, with many pensioners reduced to abject squalor and much of the country's money being transferred into the hands of the Russian mafia, I can hardly blame them.

Transitions of this nature are slow, and sometimes painful. What I hope for my Russian neighbors:

1. true self-determination - the right to choose whatever system of government is correct for them, according to the voice of the people.
   
2. The right to work, and not have the fruits of their labors taken away by the corrupt, wherever they might be.
   
3. The right to speak their minds freely.
   
4. The right to assemble peaceably
   
5. The right to be free from unreasonable search and seizure.

Our own economy and government and justice system is trending toward chaos, but the basic rights guaranteed in our constitution still provide a basic operating manual for societal tranquility. It is my hope that both our nations can do what is best for all people, and not only for the rich and powerful.
