"I need to talk to you" belongs to the same family as "We need to talk." The chilling fear that turns the male viscera to water has been a phenomenon since prehistoric times.

For me, "I need to talk to you" usually means somebody needs some information from me.
(probably as I've never been in anything even remotely resembling a serious relationship, and most of my interactions have been on a professional and/or educational level)

I have a sneaking suspicion that this may change as I get older...
