Computer woes... typical

I've been having all sorts of connectivity problems which I ascribed to switching from AVG Free version 8 to Avast!, so I thought I'd uninstall Avast! and roll back to the latest version of AVG 7.
Don't do that.
It promptly told me all my Windows kernel files were infected, and when I tried "healing" them, they were trashed.
Clean install time.
Fortunately I keep all my data on a separate drive, and an external backup drive as well - and Windows XP Pro is smart enough to create a mirror of existing profiles, so I didn't lose my extensive list of bookmarks, but I hate having to reinstall all my drivers, printers, programs and little bits and pieces that I find so useful.
Grr.
