After significant research - spurred by my not being able to activate the "line-in" or "stereo mix" feature on my HP Pavilion laptop - I discovered that HP disabled these features deliberately on their onboard Conexant sound card. This appears to be a problem with many computers running vista, and seems to be driven by the demand by RIAA that people not be able to record streaming media.

Yes, TotalRecorder will do the job for a paltry $35.00. It's just the principle of the thing.

xkcd can add Hewlett Packard to this caption.

Stinkers.

You can not record from your line-in? Great, that would have broken one of my applications that I wrote, using the sound card as a low quality oscilloscope. Stinkers, indeed.

Fortunately, this only affects my laptop - my desktop system, a Dell, does everything I want it to.

Ouch, are you sure that's not a bug?
(and for another matter, are there Linux computers on your network?)

And this is yet another reason I'm glad I don't use Windows...

It's been well-documented out there and confirmed by HP that it was a deliberate 'crippling' of the sound card. They didn't say it was at RIAA's behest, but it's not hard to connect the dots.
