Writer's Block: Home Cooking

[Error: unknown template qotd]
I enjoy cooking as a hobby, but lately I haven't taken the time to do as much - I've had too much else going on. The most recent things I've made were a delightful pasta primavera with fresh home-grown spices and fresh-grated romano cheese, lots of garlic and olive oil, and a loaf of Irish soda bread. Simple but most satisfying. Since I haven't a garden at the moment, most of my veggies are frozen organic ones - my challenge in buying fresh veggies is to use them before they go funny.

Last time I went to the grocery store, I came through the checkout line with:

1 box of Raisin bran
A quart of skim milk
2 bananas
1 red lettuce
1 tomato

The girl at the checkout said to me, "You must be single!" I asked her, "You can tell that from what I'm buying?" She said, "Nah, it's just that you're really ugly..."

Your hobby isn't cooking, it's violating the Geneva Convention by torturing people's taste buds ;)

Hey, I know. Let's each cook up a batch of stuff and see whose slumgullion kills the most mice...

The question is are you a chef or a cook?

A chef makes a specific dish to a specific recipe, a cook opens the cupboard, looks at what's inside and goes "Hmm.... do those go together? meh, why not?"

Well then, I'm definitely a cook - but I fear my "why not" may strain the imaginations and palates of some other folk...

"When you got to the table you couldn't go right to eating, but you had to wait for the widow to tuck down her head and grumble a little over the victuals, though there warn't really anything the matter with them, -- that is, nothing only everything was cooked by itself. In a barrel of odds and ends it is different; things get mixed up, and the juice kind of swaps around, and the things go better."

So anchovies, peaches, chili con carne and tuna fish make a nice casserole, if'n you can stand it. Image
