POLYGAMY, n. A house of atonement, or expiatory chapel, fitted with several stools of repentance, as distinguished from monogamy, which has but one.

Haha. But yes, I believe in monogamy. Tragically, my ex-wife didn't, and chose to trade in a used 30-year model for something different. Not newer, just different. Ah weel... palms together, palms apart.

"Marriage: a domestic state consisting of a master, a mistress, and two slaves, for a total population of two." - Ambrose Bierce, of course.

Incidentally, I was just reading a church pamphlet on marriage and same-sex unions. It reminded me that I have to choose between staying with the religion and opposing any legislation that attempts to put same-sex unions on par with matrimony. :(

My city is considering a definition. I would not be surprised at either outcome, given (1) the strong presence of liberals and (2) the strong presence of racial and ethnic minorities, who are less gay-friendly on average.

I guess it comes down to the fundamental question - do you believe in God or do you believe in Church. They should be the same thing, but they are not.

One and one usually makes life so much easier. Not always, but most of the time. No jealousy, no issues of alimony or child support, no mergers of families--just a nuclear family with other blood and legal relatives. So simple and efficient.

When I was working in Papua New Guinea one of the national guys I worked with had two wives. We asked if this was a good arrangement compared to monogamy. he said it was great except for one small problem - two mother-in-laws!!

Mark Twain, Roughing It

"Our stay in Salt Lake City amounted to only two days, and therefore we had no time to make the customary inquisition into the workings of polygamy and get up the usual statistics and deductions preparatory to calling the attention of the nation at large once more to the matter.

I had the will to do it. With the gushing self-sufficiency of youth I was feverish to plunge in headlong and achieve a great reform here... until I saw the Mormon women. Then I was touched. My heart was wiser than my head. It warmed toward these poor, ungainly and pathetically "homely" creatures, and as I turned to hide the generous moisture in my eyes, I said, "No, the man that marries one of them has done an act of Christian charity which entitles him to the kindly applause of mankind, not their harsh censure... and the man that marries sixty of them has done a deed of open-handed generosity so sublime that the nations should stand uncovered in his presence and worship in silence."
