While admitting freely that I enjoy winning more than losing, I've mellowed a lot since I was a kid. I have horrible memories of my father playing Pinochle with his cousins, and the four of them getting into the most horrible arguments over every game.

Monopoly was one of our favorites when I would visit my own cousins as a child. There was a fair amoung of competition, but I never felt that it was mean-spirited. I think there were times when I felt bad that I was losing, but I can't recall ever getting in an awful row about a game. I remember in high school, pinochle was once again a favorite for me, and our games - played for cigarettes - were ferocious but good-natured.

Having children of my own went a long way towards teaching me that the purpose of playing a game is to have fun, and not necessarily to beat the pants off of someone. I know I get very uncomfortable when playing a game with someone who's out for blood. It takes all the enjoyment out of things.
