So it turns out that my Maine Squeeze got free tickets to a concert by Jon Schmidt in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. That meant 5 hours of driving each way... and it was darned worth it. Not only was the company in the car brilliant, but the concert was spectacular as well. We got to the campus of Wake Forest University early enough to get a good parking slot right behind the fine arts center, and then queried a friendly campus cop for directions to an eatery.

He suggested the dining area, which we walked to, and encountered an amiable undergrad who took us to the right building... and then got us into the cafeteria with his meal card. Talk about the generosity of strangers! So we feasted on a huge wrap, mushroom soup, salad, pizza and ice cream, marveled at the astonishing beauty of the young people surrounding us, cracked up at the thought of two old wheezers indulging in public displays of affection while the entire dining hall went silent in shock, and just generally had a good time.

Jon's concert was exhilarating - we had front-row seats and I even caught one of the glow-in-the-dark miniballs he tossed into the audience in celebration of having played Billy Joel's Root Beer Rag in some insanely short amount of time.

We drove a couple of hours and found a Holiday Inn Express to crash (not literally!) at when I got tired - it was a nice place, and in the morning we took our journey home, arriving at the church house at 12:30 where we spent the rest of the day until about 6 or so helping to prepare and serve food for a wedding/reception. It was a lovely wedding and a very successful reception, there was more food left over at the end of the day than was consumed and at least a dozen people were kept busy prepping, heating, and serving refreshments for hours. We were bushed, but came home feeling well-pleased.

Sunday services were very nice, I got introduced to the rest of ToniAnne's ward (the ones I hadn't met at the reception) and then we came home and spent the afternoon eating lunch, taking naps, talking, visiting, and watching "Saving Grace" with Tom Conti. And other fun stuff as well.

The water that started coming in to ToniAnne's basement wasn't fun, but that's just another thing to put on the repair list. I think I see a big part of the problem, but I won't look at it until we get some warm weather - the last few days have been pretty rainy and the gutters are discharging at a point that will send water down toward the foundation rather than away from it.

Tomorrow should involve some sanding and painting, but some of what we do is weather-dependent, so we'll see what happens.
