People can be downright nasty.

While hunting around for the proper spelling of "Ketiva ve-chatima tovah", I discovered that the top 8 or 10 listings are either malware sites or have been infected by hackers.

This is what I got, including a convincing-looking animation of the progress bar:

Click on "Start Protection" and you'll get this:

which contains the malware package.

Fortunately my real virus-protector blocked any unpleasantness, but sheesh...

Never ever respond to a "security" window that pops up in a browser. Ever. Don't hit Enter or click anything, not even the X to close it. The safest thing to do is bring up the Task Manager and cancel that process. Even then it may be too late.

There are two programs that are very effective at checking and removing malware, and the fake security trojans in particular: "Spybot" and "Malwarebytes". Don't waste time with Lavasoft's AdAware; it's not aggressive enough and overlooks a lot of commercial adware companies.

Hadn't heard of Malwarebytes. I use Spybot S&D semi-regularly - AVG Free seems to work well enough that it rarely finds anything.
