People can be downright nasty.

While hunting around for the proper spelling of "Ketiva ve-chatima tovah", I discovered that the top 8 or 10 listings are either malware sites or have been infected by hackers.

This is what I got, including a convincing-looking animation of the progress bar:

Click on "Start Protection" and you'll get this:

which contains the malware package.

Fortunately my real virus-protector blocked any unpleasantness, but sheesh...

I've been encountering that same thing a lot lately.

I assume you're running AdBlock and/or NoScript on your Firefox browser. I just found out about Ghostery http://www.ghostery.com/ which tells you what sites your browser is sending your data to. You can never be too paranoid.

Have been using adblock since the beginning, but did not know about NoScript, which has now been added. Thanks for the tip(s).

I've been having a worse problem (since I switched over to Google Chrome fully, that is) with ads redirecting me to the kind of sites you list.
(I installed a kind of primitive ad-blocker now and don't have quite so many problems, but the extension is still kind of new...)

I encountered a similar page at littledee.net today. Hope I clicked the right buttons to avoid it.

Never ever respond to a "security" window that pops up in a browser. Ever. Don't hit Enter or click anything, not even the X to close it. The safest thing to do is bring up the Task Manager and cancel that process. Even then it may be too late.

There are two programs that are very effective at checking and removing malware, and the fake security trojans in particular: "Spybot" and "Malwarebytes". Don't waste time with Lavasoft's AdAware; it's not aggressive enough and overlooks a lot of commercial adware companies.

Hadn't heard of Malwarebytes. I use Spybot S&D semi-regularly - AVG Free seems to work well enough that it rarely finds anything.
