Everything can be taken from a man but one thing; the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.
-Viktor Frankl

  • I believe in a God who has a plan for me, and who can see my ultimate potential far better than I can.
  • I believe in the principle of free agency - every moment is a choice, and every choice has prices and benefits.
  • I believe in karma to the extent that what I put out into the universe comes back to me. If I put out positive energy and focus on positive things, that's what I get in exchange, from delightfully surprising sources.
  • Lastly, I believe that things happen. Good things, bad things, indifferent things. I posted previously about contrasting attitudes in the face of catastrophe; it's the meaning I assign to these things that matters, and there, as in all places, I am free to choose.

This, I fear, will be similar to my experience with LOTR... "Bedbugs! Bedbugs! There'll be no sleep today!" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nc9-PwSsWFk)

That segues into "Life is a demanding teacher. She gives the test first, and the lesson afterwards."

It's true,
and if I was to do it all again,
I'd be stuck in an infinate loop. It'd be just like working here :(

hehe yep!
I used to think dilbert was funny until I worked for a corporation. Now I read Dilbert as more of a sort of journal of futility.

Dilbert for me was a journal of solace. "See! Other people have it much worse than you! Now kwitcherbellyachin' and get back to skimming the scum off the bilgewater..." Image

I never cease to think of my favorite scene from Waterworld, where the old dude paddling around on the diesel gets blown up with a prayer of gratitude on his lips...

Castellar dy Cazaril. Sleepy John has introduced me to the Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold, which, after many days, I finally began reading.

Soon, soon, if my diabolical plans bear fruit, the Old Wolf will be reading a series of novels by Lois McMaster Bujold. The first, The Curse of Chalion, has a protagonist yclept the Castillar dy Cazaril, known socially as Caz. Caz is a shining example of how vulnerability leads to surprises.

I recommend the Chalionese books to anyone, without reservation, as some of the most thoughtful, eloquent, piss-your-pants-funny, swashbuckling fantasy ever written.

I was thinking more about how much you can control yourself. Addictions and certain mental disorders don't make it easy.
